After being out on the bike all last summer with Chris, I’ve been itching to get back out to ride again this year. My plan has been to get my license and get my own. That’s going to take a real long time!
So this weekend I was looking at Craig’s List – not looking for anything in particular, just sort of looking at everything. I checked the for sale section, I checked the free section, I checked the help wanted section. Sort of killing time, I guess. I even checked out the personals section – not exactly “looking for someone” but …just looking.
In the “strictly platonic” section, I came across an add for “Riding Partner Wanted”. Hmmmm, sounded interesting! I opened it, read it, left it open on my computer and walked away. I did a half load of dishes, came back and read it again. Started a load of laundry, read it again. Putzed around the house a bit more, came back and wrote a response – but didn’t send it. Finally after about 45 minutes of pondering, I answered it.
He responded! Pretty cool. So we emailed back and forth for the next half hour or so. Then, no response to my last message. Hmmmm, it’s pretty late – maybe tomorrow. Next day, no response whatsoever. I wait all day and nothing. Saturday morning comes and I’m pretty bummed because I’d gotten my hopes up about going out for a ride. So I start thinking about this ad again.
Then I start cruising through the personals again – this time at the “strictly platonic”, the “men seeking women” and the “women seeking men”. I’m formulating an idea here – if he posted an ad like that, why can’t I? So I open up his ad and re-read it a couple times.
Finally I decide to write my own – just something short and to the point:
Single female looking for a male riding partner. I don’t care what brand of motorcycle you have, I’m just interested in getting out and going for a long ride.
Then I upload five pretty good pictures of myself – a full length photo, a couple in my riding gear and a couple nice ones.
I didn’t wait long! Less than 15 minutes later, my phone dings and I get a response! This guy sends a message and asks for a picture – ugh what a pain, I already added pictures. I almost didn’t answer him. But I was on my phone and I knew where to find the pictures again. So I responded.
We sent back and forth about seven or eight messages – he sends me some pictures and and asks if I’m single, if I’m just looking for a ride or if I’m looking for something more. Yes, I’m single and I’m up for either one. So he asks for my name and phone number and we start texting. He said he was planning to go to Rock USA with his step-daughter but would love to take me for a ride. We talk about other days and Isaac’s work schedule. Then he gets quiet for several minutes and I’m thinking he’s getting ready to leave so I tell him to message me when he’s free. During this whole texting conversation, my phone continues to ding incessantly with new messages coming in!
After I send my last message, he messages me back and asks if it’s okay to call me. Well, sure! So he calls and we talk for nearly an hour. What a conversation, wow! Lots of similar interests, things we’d like to do, places we’d like to go. At one point in the conversation he asks how I feel about “positive thinking” and I tell him I tend to get quite negative at times and could use some positive thinking. So he says, take your ad off Craig’s List, you’re going to end up getting a whole lot of messages and you don’t need to answer any of them. Now that’s some positive thinking! After talking a bit more he said he would call me back in a few minutes.
So while he’s doing whatever, I go to the computer and delete my Craig’s List ad and look at my email. I got nearly 40 responses! One response was totally crude, one was asking me if I’d rather go out on a pontoon ride, but the rest were messages from guys asking me to send pics, for more details, and etc. I never answered any of them.
After a few minutes, my new friend calls me back and says he’s not going to Rock USA now, he gave the ticket to one of his step-daughter’s friends and that we could go riding just as soon as she stopped at his place to get the tickets.
By the time he gets to my house, it’s already 3 pm – Isaac has to be at work at 5 so we had about an hour and half to ride. So we went out for a ride on the back roads, through New London, into Waupaca, onto the highway and back to my house around 4:15. What an awesome ride – we had so much fun. The combination of different roads gave me a feel for his riding style and gave us a chance to talk to each other as we were riding. He said he was going to take the bike into Weyauwega to wash it while I took Isaac to work and he’d come back to take me for another ride.
On our second ride we rode up to Oshkosh, he showed me where he lived, then we took Country roads back home to my place. It was a pretty awesome day. With a goodbye kiss we both agreed we’d like to see each other again.
I’m really looking forward to our next ride; but mostly I’m looking forward to getting to know more about him. Seems to be a fun guy with lots of the same interests and likes that I have.
Disclosure: Craig’s List can be a dangerous place to meet people. I live in a small area but that doesn’t guarantee that I wouldn’t have ended up meeting some dangerous person. I got lucky in meeting someone genuine that wouldn’t hurt me or my family. Be very careful when meeting people on Craig’s List whether it’s to sell something or for personal reasons.
